How Your Health Affects Your Hair - Healthier Hair | Philip Kingsley
Overview
Your hair is extremely sensitive to internal changes in your body. But why is this? Partly because hair cells are our second fastest growing cells, second only to intestinal cells. However, because hair is non-essential tissue (unlike your liver or kidneys, for example) its high energy needs are never given priority. This means that your hair is usually the first thing to suffer from any bodily upset, and also the last to benefit from an improvement.
This is why, at Philip Kingsley, we take a holistic approach to hair care. When Clients come to us, our Trichologists investigate all factors that could be affecting their hair. Besides examining a person’s hair and scalp in detail, we also explore details of their diet and lifestyle; medical history; family history; and in some cases, we request blood work for a more in-depth analysis of a Client’s health.
Your hair can be affected by an extremely wide range of health-related factors, including but not limited to:
Stress and worry
Nutrition and diet
Sleep patterns
Pregnancy
Menstrual cycle
Menopause
Long term illness
Short term illness
Fever
Surgery
Medications
It is important to note that hair fall / hair loss does not always coincide with the disturbance that caused it. Due to the nature of the hair growth cycle, it is likely to take 10-12 weeks before the effects of an illness or trauma are noticeable in your hair. If you are experiencing excessive hair shedding, look back 2-3 months for possible triggers.
