Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss
What is Pattern Hair Loss?
Pattern hair loss can happen to both women and men at any age after puberty. This type of hair loss is also known as hair thinning, reduced hair volume, androgenic alopecia, and androgenic thinning.
At Philip Kingsley, we see many Clients of all ages and genders with this condition, and we know how distressing it can be. If you are experiencing hair thinning, please know that you are not alone, and that our experts are here to help.
Hair thinning is genetic, and can be inherited from either parent. It is affected by hormone levels in your body, and by your individual sensitivity to them.
If you have hair thinning, this does not mean that your hair is falling out. It means that the hair follicles on your scalp are gradually miniaturising. This leads, over several years, to a reduction in the diameter of your individual hair strands, and a loss of hair length. In other words, your hairs are growing back slightly thinner and shorter with each hair growth cycle. Eventually, hair follicles can become so small that they stop producing a hair altogether.
